The Magic of the Analogue: ‘Magpie’ Radio on Harakka Island

Celebrating the Magic of the Analogue, Harakka Radio invites you to contribute and shape a live radio program on the occasion of the Week of the Impossible, organized by the Nomadic Academy of Experimental Art, Helsinki, Finland.

For a whole week from the 22nd on, Finnish media artist and performer Kari Yli-Annala invites the world to join the artistic activities at Nomad Academy on Harakka Island. This year’s theme is “The Magic and the Analogue” – and what can be more magic and analogue than a W-Lan-free radio station on an island?

Harakka Radio is an off-shoot of the nomadic and ecologic radio art project Datscha Radio, and is maintained by Gabi Schaffner. We will broadcast for 4 days between the 25 and 28 of May on Harakka Island, reviving the tradition of micro-broadcasting. Each day for 3-4 hours, we will probe into the psychogeography of the island. The live broadcasts will present talks and readings, concerts, and experimental music.

We are curious about:

  • Local knowledge about the fauna & flora, the ecology and the history of Harakka Island
  • Poetry/conversations relating to rocks, stones, islands, birds, sea, air, radio
  • Magnetic tape recordings and your experimental tape music
  • Non-digitally produced/recorded sound art
  • Morse music, Magpies
  • Time: Deceleration tactics, deep listening
  • When interested to perform live, please send 100 words about your idea J
  • You must own the (copy)rights of your production!

Deadline and Formats

Deadline is May, 20th. Please:

  • Please send your magic radio contribution as mp3 ONLY (preferably 320 mbits)
  • label your tracks: firstname_lastname_title
  • include a pdf with <100 words about your piece (how it relates to the theme) and your person
  • put Harakka Radio as the subject line
  • send the link to info@datscharadio.de via wetransfer et al

How to listen

The station’s range of FM radio waves will cover the island… and only the island.

In order to listen visitors must take the ferry and bring a radio with them (yes, one of those boxes with an antenna and a scale pointer­). Harakka Radio will be situated at Gallery Lennätin.

We are fond of an open studio situation: performers, spontaneous live guests and visitors are welcome.

Sustainability

You are heartily invited to take out your old cassette recorders and analogue cameras from their closets and experiment with analogue documentation. We would love it, and include the results on the Datscha Radio site.

Fees
Harakka Radio works on a non-commercial basis, therefore we cannot reimburse you for your valuable time and work. What we have to offer is a radio station and art platform for discovery, exchange and networking. In the off-line world. Nähdään pian!

Harakka Island Radio

In case you didn’t know, 22 May is ‘Impossible Day’.
Day of the Impossible’. Finnish media artist and founder of the ‘nomadic academy of experimental art’, Kari Yli-Annala, invites you to artistic activities on the island of Harakka off Helsinki for a week from 22 May. This year’s theme is “The Magic of the Analogue”.

Datscha Radio is pleased to announce its sudden and surprising ‘mission impossible’ for 25-28 May 2023 in the guise of an experimental micro-FM station, Harakka Radio.

Together with the islanders, artists and guests, and under the roof of a former telegraph station, Harakka Radio will create a 3-hour live radio programme on FM for four days. Detailed information on this will be published in the next posts.

The Island

The island of Harakka (=”magpie”) is a 30-minute ferry ride from the centre of Helsinki, a predominantly flat and rocky plate of basalt and mica gneiss, criss-crossed with shimmering veins of a wide variety of minerals: magnetite, hornblende and the tourmaline-like, yellow-green epidote. The island of Harakka does not stand still: it continues to rise above sea level at a rate of 3-4 mm (30-40 cm per century). It is uninhabited today, but houses a nature conservation and education centre as well as various buildings and barracks from the time of the Russian occupation. The main venue for the event, the Nomad Academy, used to be the telecommunications centre. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the technical facilities today.

The Radio

The radio is set up in a former telegraph station with a kitchen.

Harakka Radio will only be listenable on the island and only via short wave (FM) radio. The live program focusing on the psychogeography and ecologies of the island will therefore take place partly in secret; visitors are asked to bring their own receivers.

Open Call Artists On Air

Blue and translucent as the air in Ii the violets bloom in the meadows: Yes, it is still late spring here. And just as translucent and glittering are the 28+ compositions Datscha Radio received from all corners of the world as contributions to our “Air ‘in Air’ program, broadcast between the 15th and the 19th of June.

Pieces shorter than one can hold one’s breath and pieces with enough oxygene to survive a trip into space. There are ventilators, flutes, noses in marriage with microphones, extensive compositions, ‘ear plays’, airy choirs and every now and then a musical evaporation  of voices into the hues and blues.

Due to the extraordinarily varying time spans of the different works we are still in the process of deciding how to implement them into the running schedule. State of things currently:

Pieces up to ca. 15-20 minutes will be presented in our shows. Longer works will be grouped into ‘Special Hours’ and broadcast either before and after those, with due credits given after respectively before.

We will keep you updated with more informations as soon as possible, with the midnight sun aiding us staying in awake with its untiring ray on sun (or else the ever hungry mosquitos)!

Datscha Radio will broadcast from the 8th Art Biennale in Ii, Finland. From June 15-19, 2022.

About

Art Ii Biennial addresses current themes, participates in the public discussion through the methods of art and boldly combines the rich cultural heritage of Ii with contemporary art.
The main focus of the event is ecological, economical, social and cultural sustainability.

This year’s theme is In the Air. How can the interconnected immateriality of air be communicated using the methods of art.

Broadcasting  about and  listening  to  ‘just  air’  seems  to  be  an  unusual  concept.  This  is  mainly  because  we  take  air  for  granted.  Actually,  it  is  not.  The  next  planet  with  a  probability  of  having  an  atmosphere  breathable  for  our  species  lies  159  lightyears  in  a  distance. 

Datscha Radio’s 2022 event “Air on Air” will present a 24/5 hour radio stream of the air in Ii. For three hours each day we will invite artists and locals alike into our studio to talk about air and present selected works from the open call. For the remaining hours a microphone will transmit the atmospheres of Ii. 
“Air on Air” will happen from the 16th to the 19th of June 2022, we will be broadcasting directly from the park of the Biennal, close to the banks of the river Iijoki. The broadcasts can be heard online on datscharadio.de and via micro FM on the grounds of the Biennale.

The Call

Most  people  consider  air  sound  as  boring,  since  it  contains  not  much/redundant/ uninteresting  information.  The  contrary  might  be  true.  Air  does  not  only  form  the  background  of  anything  we  perceive  by  our  sense  of  hearing:  It  constitutes  the  very  precondition  of  why  we  hear  at  all.  There  is  no  transmission  of  sound  in  empty  space.   

What  travels  empty  space  and  almost  any  space  though,  is  radio.  In  the  shape  of  electromagnetic  waves,  radio  frequencies  have  been  with  the  cosmos  from  its  very  beginning…  and  they  travel  on  forever,  no  matter  whether  they  are  emitted  by  cosmic  explosions,  radioactive  matter,  microwave  ovens,  mobile  phones,  or,  in  that  instance,  by  Datscha  Radio. 

Let us broadcast your ‘airborne’ compositions and sonic musings together under the midsummer skies of Northern Finland. Datscha Radio is looking forward to your radiophonic input.

  • Add a line as to whether you agree with having your broadcast work archived with Datscha Radio’s online documentation.

“Listening to the Universe – Radiophonien des Alls“


A radio art festival by Datscha Radio

Every year in August, the Northern Hemisphere’s night sky is graced by meteor showers – the Perseids. Datscha Radio is using this astronomical spectacle as the departure point for a 48-hour festival of radio art. The broadcast starts at moonset on August 11 at 2:04 pm.

Datscha Radio – a non-commercial, independent, nomadic and interdisciplinary Berlin radio art initiative – has been engaged in expanding the culture of radio creation since 2012. It aims to create new listening experiences beyond the dichotomies of culture/nature and sender/receiver. It is transmitted from an allotment garden in the north of Berlin.

“Listening to the Universe – Radiophonien des Alls“ is dedicated to themes and music inspired by the phenomenon of the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Every year, around August 12, as the Earth draws close to the comet’s orbit, fragments of the comet fall into the Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds and light up in the form of shooting stars.

With a broad spectrum of topics – from cosmogonical myths to the signals of meteor detectors, from starlight-inspired violin improvisations to experimental horoscopes – Datscha Radio hopes to trace the path of these ‘falling stars’ to their manifestations in space and matter as the fictions and artistic responses that are bound up with them.

Where: On UKW 88,4 in Berlin and 90,7 in Potsdam, over mini FM on location and on the Internet via datscharadio.de and fr-bb.org.
The following radio stations will be transmitting Datscha Radio’s programme: Soundart Radio (Devon/UK), Radio Lora (Zurich/CH), Radio free FM (Ulm), Radio Blau (Leipzig), Archipel Stations (Berlin).
